9-Day Ruaha & Nyerere Wilderness Safari in Southern Tanzania

Day 2 · Nyerere

On the Water in Nyerere

Nyerere’s signature experience is the boat safari. In a small, shaded boat, your guide idles along the Rufiji and the oxbow lakes it has left behind, where hippo pods surface and snort, crocodiles slide off sandbanks and elephants may wade between islands. The birdlife is exceptional: African fish eagles call from dead trees, and from roughly August to November carmine bee-eaters may nest in the riverbanks. Being at water level changes how you see everything. In the afternoon you swap boat for vehicle, looking for lion, buffalo and giraffe around the lakes.

Day 3–4 · Nyerere

On Foot in the Nyerere Wilderness

Walking is one of the great reasons to come south. With an armed ranger and your guide, you set out in the cool of the morning, reading lion spoor and elephant dung and approaching wildlife slowly and from downwind. Walks typically last two to three hours and cover a few kilometres at an easy pace. Longer drives take you deeper into woodland and palm-fringed lakes, and Nyerere is known as one of the strongholds of the African wild dog, though sightings are never assured. Evenings are for the fire and a camp full of night sounds.

Day 6 · Ruaha

Lion Country on the Great Ruaha

Ruaha is known for its lions, with large prides that tackle buffalo and sometimes even young giraffe, and the park is also an important refuge for cheetah and leopard. Your guide may head out at first light to follow fresh tracks along a dry sand river, where lions often rest in the shade of the banks. Watch the woodland edges for greater kudu, whose spiralled horns and pale stripes make them one of Africa’s most elegant antelopes; lesser kudu favour denser scrub. Lunch is a picnic beneath a baobab, some here many centuries old.

Day 7–8 · Ruaha

Deep in Ruaha

With two more full days, you can go further. A long drive into the park’s quieter reaches may bring roan or sable antelope, and Ruaha is one of the places in East Africa where African wild dogs are still seen, though never predictably. Walks here feel especially wild, following elephant paths between rocky outcrops with the smell of dust and wild herbs in the air. Some camps sit on land where night drives are allowed, which can reveal genets, civets and hunting lions. You may pass a whole day with only a handful of other vehicles.

Day 9 · Ruaha

Out of the Wilderness

Flight · Ruaha → Dar es Salaam · about 2–3 hours, often with a stop — Flights to Zanzibar are an easy alternative.

A final morning in Ruaha, perhaps a short walk or one last look at the river, then the flight back east. Most scheduled services stop at least once, often in Nyerere, before reaching Dar es Salaam in the afternoon. From there you connect to your international flight, or continue to Zanzibar for a beach finish; on many days the same light-aircraft network can fly you to the island directly. It is a good moment to look down at the miombo woodland and appreciate how little of it any road reaches.
