A good family safari is built around attention spans. After a first night in Arusha, every stay on this route is two or three nights, so you unpack only four times in nine days, and most road legs run about two hours. Because the vehicle and guide are yours alone, a game drive can end the moment someone is hungry, tired or has simply seen enough, and start again after a swim.

The order matters as well. Tarangire’s elephants make a thrilling, easy first park. The Karatu highlands then add a coffee farm and a pool, giving young minds a break from spotting, before the crater and the Serengeti arrive once everyone has found their safari rhythm. Parents get a sundowner on the deck; children get a guide who treats every question, however small, as a good one.

Why this route works

Distances grow gradually. Arusha to Tarangire is about two to two and a half hours, and Tarangire to Karatu about two. Staying in the highlands puts the crater rim only about 45 minutes away, so the descent needs no pre-dawn scramble and you are back by the pool mid-afternoon. The one longer road day, into the Serengeti, comes once children are used to the vehicle and is broken by a Maasai visit and a picnic. At the end you fly back to Arusha instead of spending most of a day on the road.

    After the long flight, the aim is simply to land softly. Your driver meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport with cold water and, if you have asked for them, child seats, and the drive to Arusha takes about an hour. Your hotel has gardens to run around in and, at the premium and luxury levels, a pool. Dinner can be early and simple. Jet lag in children usually eases within a day or two, which is one reason tomorrow’s first game drive is an afternoon one rather than a dawn start.

    First Elephants in Tarangire

    A mid-morning start gets you to Tarangire for lunch, with time for a swim before the afternoon drive. Tarangire is a generous first park for children: elephants are often plentiful, especially in the dry season, and the baobabs are so vast they feel like characters in a story. Guides are practised at turning a drive into a game, from counting giraffes to working out why no two zebras share the same stripes. The drive lasts as long as interest does, typically two to three hours, and you are back before dark.

  3. Day 3 · Tarangire

    A Full Day on the Tarangire River

    Children are often at their brightest early, so today may begin with a morning drive along the Tarangire River while animals are active. Look for lions resting in the shade, dwarf mongooses popping out of termite mounds, and hornbills hopping along the track. Lunch can be a picnic or back at the lodge, and the heat of midday is pool time. Whether you head out again in the afternoon is entirely up to you. That flexibility is the real advantage of a private vehicle: nobody else’s plans shape your family’s day.

  4. Day 4 · Karatu

    Coffee Country in the Karatu Highlands

    The road climbs from the dry plains to the cool, green Karatu highlands, passing banana groves and the busy market town of Mto wa Mbu. After lunch, a coffee farm tour lets children pick ripe red cherries in season, see how beans are dried and roasted, and grind a batch themselves; parents get the tasting. Highland lodges here tend to have lawns, pools and space to run, and many offer family rooms or interconnecting cottages. Evenings are chilly at this altitude, so pack a warm layer and expect a fire before dinner.

    Day 5 · Ngorongoro Crater

    A Day in the Ngorongoro Crater

    From Karatu the crater rim is about 45 minutes away, then the road winds down some 600 metres to the floor. It is a compact, animal-dense world that suits children well: buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and hyenas are often close to the track, hippos grunt in the pools, and flamingos may tint the soda lake pink. It is also your best chance on this route to look for black rhino, usually at a distance. Eat your picnic inside the vehicle or keep sandwiches close, because the resident black kites are bold.

    Today is the longest road day, so it comes in pieces. Crossing the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, you stop at a Maasai homestead, where families welcome visitors, children compare jumping heights with young herders, and you learn how cattle shape everything from diet to daily routine. After a picnic near Naabi Hill, where the Serengeti formally begins, the plains open out to the horizon. Game viewing on the way keeps things lively, and you reach camp by late afternoon with time to explore the tent before dinner.

  7. Day 7–8 · Central Serengeti

    Serengeti Days at Family Pace

    The Central Serengeti holds game all year, which keeps these two days rewarding whatever the season. Lions are often found on the kopjes, cheetahs hunt the open grass, and the Seronera River valley is one of Africa’s best places to look for leopards. Your guide can plan a longer outing one day, with an optional bush breakfast laid out on the plains, and a shorter one the next. Family tents with two bedrooms, or connecting rooms at lodges, keep everyone close at night, and many camps have a pool.

    Fly Home from Seronera

    A last short drive takes you to the airstrip, where children usually love watching the small plane land on the dirt runway. The scheduled flight to Arusha takes about an hour to an hour and a half, sometimes with a stop, and the view over the crater highlands is a fine final look at the week. A driver then takes you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for evening departures. Luggage on these aircraft is typically limited to about 15 kg per person in soft-sided bags, so pack the whole family with that in mind.

June – October
Dry season and northern-hemisphere summer holidays: excellent game viewing, cool mornings and the busiest camps. For July and August, booking 9–12 months ahead is wise.
December – February
Warm and green, with the Christmas holidays in high demand. Young animals are common across the parks, and brief afternoon showers rarely spoil a day.
March – May and November
Lush landscapes and fewer visitors, but some camps close in April–May and muddy tracks can lengthen drive days. Easter travel works with the right camps.

Is there a minimum age for this family safari?

A private safari itself has no minimum age, but some camps only accept children above a set age and certain activities have their own limits. Walking safaris are often limited to children 12 or older, and balloon flights also set a minimum age. We match camps and activities to your children’s ages when we plan.

How long are the drives with children?

Road transfers are about two to two and a half hours on the first days, and the day into the Serengeti is longer but broken by a Maasai visit and a picnic. Game drives are flexible: with a private vehicle, you head back to camp whenever someone needs a break. The trip ends with a flight rather than a full day on the road.

Do our children need malaria tablets?

Most of Tanzania’s safari areas carry some malaria risk, though it is generally lower in the cool highlands. Ask a travel-health clinic well before you travel about options suited to each child’s age and weight, and read our vaccines and yellow fever guide. Camps provide mosquito nets, and long sleeves after dusk help.

When is the best time for a family safari in Tanzania?

June to October combines dry-season game viewing with the long summer break, though it is also the busiest period. December to February is warm, green and full of young animals, and suits the winter holidays. Either way, book early for school holidays, because family tents are limited.

What changes between the comfort, premium and luxury levels?

Comfort uses well-run lodges with pools and family rooms; premium adds farm lodges and classic tented camps with more character; luxury moves you to a private concession camp in Tarangire and a Serengeti lodge with more space and service. All three keep the same private vehicle, guide and route. Levels can also be mixed, spending more where you stay longest.
