Not always. Many experienced safari guides understand photography well, and we request one who does. A specialist photographic guide adds coaching and technical advice and can sometimes be arranged for part or all of a trip.
Fewer is better. Two or three photographers gives everyone room to shoot from either side and space for gear, and many travelers book a vehicle just for themselves — see private vs group safaris.
Yes, within park hours. Full-day drives with packed breakfast and lunch are common for photographers and keep you in the field for the moments that matter.
Off-road driving is restricted or prohibited in most national parks to protect habitats, and rules differ between areas. A good guide knows where positioning is allowed and anticipates animals’ movements within those rules.

In the air
Drift over the Serengeti at first light as the plains wake beneath you, then land for a champagne breakfast in the bush.
After dark
Head out after dark with a red-filtered spotlight to find the bush’s nocturnal cast — genets, bushbabies, hunting predators and, with luck, an aardvark.
On foot
