From around December to March, much of the migration settles on the short-grass plains around Ndutu, where volcanic soils grow grass rich in the minerals nursing mothers need. Calving usually peaks around February, when thousands of calves may be born in a single day. It is one of the most intense wildlife events in Africa, and the predators know it too.

This itinerary is built to be there. After a night in Arusha and two in the Ngorongoro highlands, including a morning in the crater, you continue past Olduvai Gorge to the southern plains for four nights. Ndutu lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area on the edge of the Serengeti, and your guide can follow the herds across both. Because timing depends on the rains, we plan your dates around recent seasons.

Why this route works

Calving season rewards staying still in the right place, so this route front-loads its transfers and keeps them short. Two nights in the highlands let you settle in, explore the crater at a relaxed pace and add an optional walk. Ndutu is only about 2–2.5 hours from the crater rim, with Olduvai Gorge on the way, so you arrive with the afternoon ahead. Four consecutive nights there mean you never lose a morning to packing, and Ndutu airstrip lets you fly straight back to Arusha at the end.

    Your guide welcomes you at Kilimanjaro International Airport for the drive of about an hour to Arusha. In calving season the countryside is usually green and warm, with clouds sometimes building over Mount Meru in the afternoon. Your first night is quiet by design. Over dinner, your guide explains how the season works — how the rains draw the herds south, why the short grass matters and how the coming days will run — and checks that your camera kit is ready for the plains.

    Day 2 · Ngorongoro Crater

    Into the Crater Highlands

    Drive · Arusha → Ngorongoro highlands · about 3 hours

    Drive west from Arusha across dry plains dotted with Maasai bomas, then climb the Rift Valley escarpment to the Ngorongoro highlands, about three hours in all. The afternoon is deliberately light. If you added a guided highlands walk, you follow forest edges and open ridges with a ranger, reading buffalo tracks and watching sunbirds in the flowering shrubs. Otherwise, settle in at your lodge, where the temperature drops quickly as the sun goes down and a fire is usually lit before dinner. Rest well, because the crater starts early.

  3. Day 3 · Ngorongoro Crater

    The Crater in Green Season

    In calving season the crater floor is usually lush, and it tends to be less busy than in the dry months. You descend early and spend the morning among the zebra, wildebeest and buffalo that live here year-round, with flamingos often on Lake Magadi and hippos wallowing in the swamps. Your guide scans the open grass for black rhino, present here in small numbers. After a picnic lunch you climb out through the forest and have the late afternoon to rest in the highlands or walk the lodge grounds.

  4. Day 4 · Olduvai Gorge

    Past Olduvai to the Short-Grass Plains

    Drive · Ngorongoro highlands → Ndutu · about 2–3 hours, plus the Olduvai visit

    After breakfast you leave the highlands and wind down through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area toward the plains. The first stop is Olduvai Gorge, studied for about a century, where a small museum overlooks the layered cliffs that yielded early human fossils and tools. From there it is a short run to Ndutu, where open grassland meets acacia woodland around two shallow soda lakes, Ndutu and Masek. In a good year the first herds appear before you even reach camp, and your afternoon game drive begins on the way in.

    Day 5 · Ndutu

    Where the Calves Are Born

    You head out early, because many births happen in the morning and predators hunt in the cooler hours. Out on the plains you may watch a calf stand within minutes of being born and run beside its mother soon after. Your guide reads the herd for females about to give birth and scans the edges for lions, cheetahs and hyenas watching the same scene. Where current rules allow, vehicles in the Ndutu area may leave the tracks, which can mean closer, better-angled viewing. Lunch is a picnic, wherever the action is.

  6. Day 6–7 · Ndutu

    Following the Southern Herds

    Two more full days let your guide go wherever the herds have drifted overnight — the open plains toward the Gol Kopjes, the woodland around Lake Masek or the marshes where lions often rest in the shade. Beyond the wildebeest, look for bat-eared foxes at their dens, servals hunting in longer grass and giraffes browsing the acacias. Photographers have low sun at both ends of the day and time to wait for it. If a balloon is operating in the area and you have booked it, a dawn flight over the plains fills one morning.

  7. Day 8 · Ndutu

    A Flight Over the Plains

    A last drive around camp at dawn is often rewarding in calving season, as hyenas and jackals finish the night’s work. After breakfast you transfer to Ndutu airstrip for a scheduled flight to Arusha of about 1–1.5 hours, sometimes stopping at another airstrip along the way. From the window, the green plains give way to the crater highlands and the Rift Valley. In Arusha you are met and taken to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home, or you can continue by air to Zanzibar if you are extending.

How This Journey Changes Through the Year

Late December–January
Herds usually arrive on the southern plains with the short rains, and the first calves appear. The grass is fresh and green, and afternoon showers are possible.
February
Calving typically peaks, bringing the most predator activity around the herds. The weather is often warm, with a drier spell between the rains, though no two years are the same.
March
Calving tails off and the long rains begin, sometimes turning tracks to mud. Herds may still be on the plains or starting to drift north and west, depending on rainfall.

How long are the drives on this itinerary?

The longest road transfers are about 3 hours from Arusha to the highlands and about 2–2.5 hours from the crater rim to Ndutu, plus the Olduvai stop. After that you stay put for four nights and fly home, so the second half of the trip has no long transfers.

What are the accommodation options at Ndutu?

Comfort uses a permanent lodge in the Ndutu woodland, simple but well placed. Premium is a seasonal mobile camp that sets up on the plains for calving season, putting you close to the herds, and luxury is a more spacious tented camp with extra comfort and service.

Is calving season good for seeing predators?

It is often the most active time of year for predators in the Serengeti ecosystem. Lions, cheetahs and spotted hyenas follow the herds, and vulnerable calves make hunting easier, so you may witness a hunt. Sightings are never certain, and some scenes can be hard to watch.

What should I pack for calving season?

Bring layers, because highland mornings can be cold while the plains are warm by midday, plus a light rain jacket for afternoon showers. Soft-sided bags are essential for the flight from Ndutu, which usually allows only around 15 kg (33 lb) each.
