Six days gives you a taste. Eight to ten lets the safari breathe. Here is how to find the right length for your trip.
The honest answer: more than you think, but less than you fear. Five or six days on the ground gives you a real taste of the northern circuit — Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and a short stay in the Serengeti. Eight to ten days is the sweet spot for most first safaris, with time to settle into each place rather than pass through. Add Zanzibar and you are looking at 11–14 days; add the remote south or the chimpanzees of Lake Tanganyika and 12 days or more.

Length matters less than shape. The same ten days can feel rushed or restorative depending on how often you move, whether you drive or fly the long legs, and how gently you ease in after the flight.

Five days on the ground can work if you focus — for example Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and a night or two in the Serengeti with a flight out. A larger share of the time goes on transit, though, and there is little slack for weather or late flights. If you can find one or two more days, the trip changes character.
Plan at least two to three nights; the park covers about 14,750 km² and distances are large. If you are following the migration, add three to four nights in the seasonal area — Ndutu, the Western Corridor or the north — where the moments that reward patience tend to happen.
Three nights is the minimum to feel rested; four or five lets you properly slow down. Add a night in Stone Town if you want to explore its lanes, markets and history before heading to the beach.
A mix usually works best. Driving the shorter, paved legs keeps game viewing and continuity with your driver-guide; flying the longest legs — into or out of the Serengeti and between its areas — saves hours on rough roads. On a trip of nine days or more, one or two flights can free up close to a full extra day on safari.
Yes, with enough time and at least one flight. The southern parks, Nyerere and Ruaha, are reached by light aircraft — from Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar or, on some routes, Arusha — rather than by road from the north. Allow roughly 12 days or more to do both justice, with three to four nights in each southern park.
