If you want the two great names of northern Tanzania and the time to enjoy them properly, this is the classic way to do it. The journey opens at Lake Manyara, a compact park where groundwater forest meets a soda lake beneath the Rift Valley wall, then climbs through the highlands to the central Serengeti for three full nights.

The Ngorongoro Crater comes at the end rather than the start. By then you know how to read a landscape and will get more from the caldera’s dense wildlife, and two nights in the highlands mean a calm morning descent rather than a dash. Everything is by road in your private vehicle, which suits photographers who want to stop whenever the light is right.

Why this route works

The loop runs clockwise so the pace builds and then eases. Lake Manyara is only about two hours from Arusha, leaving most of your first full day for game driving. The next day’s long drive through the highlands delivers you to Seronera with the best of the trip ahead, and three nights there are the heart of the journey. Heading back east, Olduvai Gorge breaks up the drive, and two nights near the Ngorongoro Crater allow an early descent without a rushed departure afterward. The final drive to Arusha takes about 3.5–4.5 hours.

    You land at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where your guide is waiting beyond customs. The drive west to Arusha takes about an hour, past banana groves and small farms, with the dark bulk of Mount Meru ahead. Depending on your arrival time, there may be a chance to swim or wander through the gardens before dinner. Later, your guide talks you through the route, checks your camera gear and answers any questions about the week ahead. Sleep early if you can, because tomorrow begins in the Rift Valley.

    Day 2 · Lake Manyara

    Forest, Soda Lake and the Rift Wall

    A drive of about two hours brings you to the foot of the Rift Valley escarpment and the gate of Lake Manyara National Park. Within minutes you are in groundwater forest, where springs keep fig and mahogany trees green year-round, troops of olive baboons forage along the track and blue monkeys move through the canopy. Further on, the forest gives way to grassland and the lake shore, where hippos wallow and flamingos gather in some seasons. Manyara’s lions are known for resting in trees, though sightings are unpredictable.

    Day 3 · Central Serengeti

    Across the Highlands to the Serengeti

    Today crosses three worlds. You climb past Karatu’s farmland into the cool montane forest of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and pause at the crater viewpoint for a first look into the caldera you will explore at the end of the week. The road then descends through Maasai grazing land to the southern Serengeti plains. Lunch is usually at Naabi Hill Gate, where a short path up the kopje shows grassland running to every horizon. The afternoon is a slow game drive north to Seronera.

  4. Day 4–5 · Central Serengeti

    Leopard Trees and Lion Kopjes

    Two full days let your guide work the central Serengeti properly. Mornings often start along the Seronera River, scanning sausage trees for the tail of a leopard hanging from a branch, before moving out to the Simba or Maasai kopjes, where lion prides rest on warm granite. Afternoons might mean waiting by a hippo pool or following a cheetah as she surveys the plains from a termite mound. Photographers have time to stay with one sighting for an hour instead of hopping between many. A dawn balloon flight can be added on either morning.

  5. Day 6 · Olduvai Gorge

    After a final morning drive, you head back across the plains toward the highlands. The afternoon stop is Olduvai Gorge, where excavations led by Mary and Louis Leakey uncovered fossils and stone tools that reshaped the story of human origins. A small museum sits on the lip of the gorge, and a local guide explains the layered cliffs in front of you. The road then climbs into the Ngorongoro highlands, and you arrive in time to watch the evening mist settle over the forest and farmland.

    Day 7 · Ngorongoro Crater

    Inside the Caldera

    Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater soon after the gate opens, while the floor is still cool and lions may be finishing a night’s hunt. The caldera is about 600 meters deep, and its walls hold in a remarkable density of wildlife: buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, spotted hyena and golden jackal, with a chance of black rhino on the open grassland. Lunch is a picnic near Ngoitokitok Springs, where your guide may suggest eating inside the vehicle because the black kites here are bold. Time on the floor is regulated, so you climb out in the afternoon.

    A slow breakfast with a view is the only plan for the morning. You then drive back through Karatu and down the Rift Valley escarpment, about 3.5–4.5 hours to Arusha or the airport, with a lunch stop and a chance to browse for Tingatinga paintings or kanga cloth. Your guide continues to Kilimanjaro International Airport in time for your evening departure, or to a day room if you have a long wait. If you added a coffee-farm tour, it fits neatly into the final afternoon near Arusha.

How This Journey Changes Through the Year

June–October
Dry, clear days and cold dawns. Game gathers around water, Manyara’s forest tracks are easy going and the crater is at its busiest, so an early descent matters more.
December–March
The migration herds usually graze the southern plains you cross on days 3 and 6, though how close they are depends on the rains. Green grass, newborn animals and big skies suit photographers.
November
Short rains usually fall as afternoon storms. Flamingos may gather on Lake Manyara, vehicle numbers drop and the Serengeti turns green within days of the first rain.

How much driving is there on this route?

Two days involve longer drives: about 5–6 hours from Lake Manyara to Seronera, and about 4–5 hours back to the highlands with the Olduvai stop, both broken up by game viewing and lunch. The final drive to Arusha takes about 3.5–4.5 hours. Every other day is spent game driving at your own pace.

What is the best month for the Serengeti & Ngorongoro Classic?

It works well from June through March. The dry months of June to October make wildlife easiest to find, while December to March often brings the migration onto the southern plains you cross. April and May are the long rains, and we usually suggest a different plan then.

Which comfort level should I choose?

Comfort uses well-run lodges and tented camps with private bathrooms, and premium adds smaller camps and a working farm lodge in the highlands. Luxury puts you in a treehouse-style lodge at Manyara and on the crater rim. Ultra is for travelers who want the most exclusive stays in the central Serengeti and on the rim, with more space and fewer guests.

Why is the Ngorongoro Crater at the end rather than the start?

Ending in the highlands gives you two nights close to the crater, so you can descend at first light and still have a relaxed departure the next day. After several days in the Serengeti, you also appreciate the crater’s density of wildlife, and its rhino, for what they are.

Is this itinerary good for photography?
