Dawn game drives on the Serengeti, then barefoot days on the Indian Ocean — usually just an afternoon’s flight apart.
The perfect Tanzania journey doesn’t have to end in the bush. After a week of 6 a.m. starts, dust and the intense focus of game viewing, a few days on Zanzibar’s white-sand coast turn a safari into a complete holiday — and few safari countries make the pairing this easy. The island is part of Tanzania, usually a same-day flight from the northern parks, and its best beach weather overlaps with most of the best months on safari.
Zanzibar is also far more than a beach. Stone Town’s carved doors and spice-scented lanes, the red colobus monkeys of Jozani Forest and the reefs around Mnemba give it a character entirely unlike the Serengeti — which is exactly why the two work so well together. The safari provides the drama; the island provides the exhale.

Safari + beach
Most travelers settle on one of four shapes: a longer safari when wildlife is the point, more beach nights for a true second holiday, or luxury and honeymoon pairings that raise the level at both ends. Each puts the safari first and ends on the coast, which is kinder on body clocks.

In most cases you can leave the Serengeti in the morning and be on the sand by late afternoon. Schedules vary by season, so treat this as the usual pattern rather than a timetable.
Your final morning includes a game drive that ends at the airstrip — often Seronera in the central Serengeti, or Kogatende in the north. Your guide times it around the flight, so the drive to the plane is still game viewing.
Scheduled light-aircraft services fly from the Serengeti airstrips, often via Arusha (about 1–1.5 hours), sometimes with an extra stop at another airstrip. Luggage is typically limited to about 15 kg per person in soft bags.
From Arusha, the onward flight to Zanzibar takes about an hour and a half. Some services continue from the Serengeti with a stop, taking roughly 2.5–3.5 hours in total. We plan the connection so any wait is a sensible one.
Flights land at Zanzibar’s international airport just outside Stone Town, where a driver meets you. Allow about 15–20 minutes to Stone Town, roughly an hour to the east coast and around an hour to an hour and a half to Nungwi and Kendwa in the north.
When timings do not line up, or you would rather not end a long day in transit, a night in Arusha or Stone Town makes a graceful bridge.
Where to stay
Zanzibar is under 100 km from tip to tip, yet each coast feels distinct — and the tides matter more than most travelers expect.
Tidal like every coast here, with two highs and two lows a day, but deeper water close to shore usually keeps swimming possible through more of the cycle, and the west-facing beaches catch the island’s best sunsets. Livelier than elsewhere, with a wide choice of resorts.
Long, powder-white beaches on a shallow shore: at low tide the sea can retreat several hundred meters, exposing extensive reef flats, seaweed farms and rock pools. Paje is a kitesurfing hub in the windy months; Jambiani and Michamvi are quieter and more village-like.
The historic heart of the island and a UNESCO World Heritage Site: coral-stone lanes, rooftop dinners and the Forodhani Gardens food market at dusk. One or two nights suits most travelers, at the start or end of the beach stay.
A private island within a protected marine conservation area off the north-east coast, reached by boat. The reefs are excellent for snorkeling and diving, and dolphins are often seen in the surrounding channel.
The quietest corner of the island: a marine conservation area of sandbanks, mangroves and dhow trips, where dolphins are frequently seen. Fewer hotels, a slower rhythm and an easy drive from the airport.
When to go
The safari and the coast share most of their good months.

Migration positions depend on rainfall and shift from year to year; these are typical patterns, not predictions.
Balance
Three to five nights is the usual range, and the difference is noticeable. Three nights gives you two full days — enough to sleep off the early starts and snorkel or see Stone Town once, though you may be packing again just as you settle. Four nights is the most popular balance, and it is the rhythm of our 11-day Serengeti and Zanzibar journey. Five or more suits honeymooners, families and divers, or anyone who wants the beach to feel like a second holiday rather than an epilogue.
If Stone Town appeals, add a night rather than borrowing one from the beach. It is best at dusk, when the heat eases and the waterfront food stalls open, and works at either end of your island stay.
And if you are torn between one more night on safari and one more on the sand, ask which you would regret missing. Many first-time visitors choose the safari; returning travelers often choose the beach.

No. Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of the United Republic of Tanzania, so a Tanzanian visa covers it and flights from the mainland are domestic. At the time of writing, however, Zanzibar also requires visitors to hold a specific inbound travel insurance policy bought before arrival, and passports are checked on landing. Check the official portals before you travel, as rules can change.
It depends on what you want from the beach. The north coast around Nungwi and Kendwa is best for swimming at most tides and for sunsets; the east coast suits travelers who want quiet, space and kitesurfing; Mnemba and private villas suit couples who want seclusion. Families with young children usually do best in the north or at a resort with a large pool.
Yes. Mnemba Atoll off the north-east coast is the best-known site, with turtles, reef fish and frequent dolphin sightings, and there is good diving off the north coast and in Menai Bay. Sea conditions and visibility are often best from roughly October to March, though diving runs for most of the year.
You can — it is roughly an hour each way from the north and east coasts. But Stone Town is at its best in the evening, when the heat fades and the waterfront food market comes alive, so a night there is usually more rewarding than a hurried day trip.
Almost always. From the northern circuit you fly from the Serengeti or Arusha; from Ruaha or Nyerere you fly via Dar es Salaam or, on some services, direct to the island. The main exception is the long rains around April and May, when some beach hotels close or scale back.
