Real luxury on safari is less about thread counts than about space, privacy, time and expertise, and this journey is built on all four. Light aircraft replace the long road days, so the hours you would spend on corrugated tracks go to game viewing instead. Camps are small and widely spaced, chosen above all for the quality of their guiding, and your vehicle is never shared.

The route begins in the western Serengeti. In the ultra tier you stay on a private reserve bordering the national park, where walking and night drives may be permitted and vehicle numbers are tightly controlled. From there you move to the kopje country of the Central Serengeti, then finish on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, descending at dawn before most vehicles arrive.

Why this route works

Starting in the west puts you where the Serengeti is quietest for much of the year, and where the herds typically pass through from around May to July, depending on the rains. A game drive of around three hours, or a short hop, takes you to the Central Serengeti. A flight to the Lake Manyara airstrip then brings you within about an hour and a half of the crater rim. Ending at the crater means your last great experience is its early-morning descent, followed by a short flight out rather than a long drive.

    Day 1 · Arusha

    An Estate in the Foothills of Mount Meru

    You are met in arrivals and driven about an hour to a quiet estate in the foothills of Mount Meru, set among gardens and old trees. The pace is deliberately slow: a swim, perhaps a massage, a long dinner. Before you sleep, a member of the local team walks you through the week, from light-aircraft luggage limits, typically about 15 kg per person in soft bags, to the dress code, which is essentially relaxed. Anything you will not need on safari can usually be stored here until you pass back through.

    From Arusha’s domestic airport, the light aircraft lifts over the Rift Valley and the crater highlands and out across the plains to a grass airstrip in the west, where your guide waits beside the plane. The Western Corridor runs towards Lake Victoria along the Grumeti River, whose gallery forest shelters black-and-white colobus monkeys and whose pools hide some of the Serengeti’s largest crocodiles. The afternoon drive is an introduction to the lie of the land and its resident lions, and, from around May to July, the chance of the migration passing through.

  3. Day 3–4 · Western Serengeti

    On Foot and After Dark in the West

    In the ultra tier, your lodge sits on a private reserve bordering the national park, where walking and night drives may be permitted. On foot, you learn to read tracks in the dust and to feel the difference between watching an animal and being watched by one. After dark, a spotlight may pick out genets, bushbabies, porcupines or a lion on the hunt. In the luxury tier, days centre on game drives inside the park along the Grumeti, with walking only where the camp’s location allows. One evening, the camp sets a private dinner in the bush, lit by lanterns and fire.

    Day 5 · Central Serengeti

    Into the Heart of the Serengeti

    Drive · Western Serengeti → Central Serengeti (Seronera) · about 3 hours as a game drive — A short scheduled light-aircraft hop is an alternative.

    Today you can choose. Driving east through the Western Corridor turns the transfer into a game drive of around three hours, with picnic stops wherever something holds your attention; a short scheduled hop is the alternative. Either way, the landscape shifts from woodland and river to open grassland studded with granite kopjes. The Seronera valley, with its permanent water and sausage trees, supports a density of predators that makes it rewarding at any time of year. Your camp here is small and quiet, and the afternoon can end with a drink as the plains turn gold.

  5. Day 6 · Central Serengeti

    Kopje Country

    A full day in the Central Serengeti rewards patience. Your guide may plan the morning around the Moru or Simba kopjes, where lions lounge on warm granite and klipspringer pick their way over the boulders, then track cheetahs across the short grass after lunch. If photography matters to you, a dedicated vehicle with beanbags, camera mounts and charging lets you shoot from any angle, and your guide positions for light rather than simply for the sighting. If the balloon calls, today is the day: up before dawn, then down to breakfast laid out in the grass.

    Day 7 · Ngorongoro Crater

    Flight to the Crater Rim

    Flight · Seronera airstrip → Lake Manyara airstrip · about 1 hour — Then about 1.5 hours by road up to the crater rim.

    After a last morning drive, you fly east to the airstrip above Lake Manyara, where your guide and vehicle meet you for the drive up through the highlands. You arrive on the crater rim, at roughly 2,300 metres, in time to watch evening light slide across the floor far below. The air is cool, the fires are lit and dinner is unhurried. Lodges on the rim are among the most dramatic in Tanzania, and the view is the point, so we request a room facing into the crater.

  7. Day 8 · Ngorongoro Crater

    Staying on the rim means you can be at the descent road as the gate opens, reaching the floor while mist still lies on the grass. For the first hour you often share the crater with very few vehicles. Lions stretch in the cold, hyenas return from the night’s hunting, and your guide scans the far grassland for the dark shape of a black rhino. Time on the floor is limited, so you will likely be back on the rim by early afternoon, with time for a ranger-led walk along the forested edge or an hour on your terrace.

  8. Day 9 · Ngorongoro Crater

    Farewell from the Highlands

    Flight · Lake Manyara airstrip → Arusha or Kilimanjaro · about 30 minutes — By road, the crater to Arusha is about 3.5–4.5 hours.

    A slow breakfast on the terrace, one more look into the crater, then the drive down through Karatu to the Lake Manyara airstrip. The flight to Arusha or Kilimanjaro is brief, and from there you connect to your international departure or continue to a beach extension. If your flight leaves late at night, a day room at an Arusha estate can be arranged so you can shower and rest. The return takes a fraction of the time the road would, which is exactly the point of flying in.

How This Journey Changes Through the Year

June – October
Classic dry season. In June and July the migration often lingers in the western Serengeti; by August most herds have typically moved north, while resident game stays excellent everywhere.
December – February
Green-season beauty with fewer vehicles. The herds usually graze the southern plains, which a short flight from the Central Serengeti can reach if you add a night at Ndutu.
March – May
The long rains. Some camps close around April–May, while others stay open with lower occupancy and the landscape at its most vivid; we advise case by case.

There are three scheduled flights on safari: Arusha to the western Serengeti, Seronera to Lake Manyara, and a short hop from Lake Manyara back to Arusha or Kilimanjaro, with an optional fourth between west and central. Light aircraft typically allow about 15 kg per person in soft-sided bags, including camera gear. An extra seat or a private charter can raise that allowance.

When is the best time for this luxury Tanzania safari?

Night drives are generally not permitted inside Tanzania’s national parks, which is why this journey places them on a private reserve in the ultra tier, where they may be permitted.
